Sea Of Joy (Lounge)

Sea of Joy was made following the success of Evolution. The radical changes documented in Evolution had led to an era of surfing which was expressed by respect for nature & the natural forces which shape the surfer’s world. The wind, the waves, the sky, the sea. By living in harmony with these natural forces the surfer could find new meaning in his life, and could withdraw from much of the political chaos sweeping the world in the post Vietnam era. This search for meaning was a world-wide movement emerging in the growing youth culture which had roots in Australia, California, Hawaii, in France & wherever young colonies of surfers gathered in beachside enclaves. The story of Sea of Joy is the story of a band of immensely talented young Australian surfers – Nat Young, Wayne Lynch & Ted Spencer, as they travelled the surfing world breaking down barriers & exploring new territories in a quest for an illusory nirvana.

Deeply introspective music penned for a 1970 Australian surf film -- tracks that have a grounding in instrumental rock, but which also show plenty of trance-like and meditative modes as well! The titles are relatively short, but spin out with an open-ended quality that's almost like that of much longer instrumental jams -- built up out of a spare and shifting assemblage of elements that include organ, flute, clarinet, piano, gong, and guitar -- plus a bit of softly-sung vocals on a few numbers. There's an almost folk-like fragility to some of the tunes, but others have a more spacious feel that fits their use in a second-generation surf film nicely. Titles include "Cat Clarinet Mit Orgel", "Follow Me", "Pseudo Tragic Dramatic", "Sea Of Joy", "Thank You", "Softly Softly", "Syndrome", and "Down To The Sea".

Morning Cup Of Jazz, Easy Listening

This is a morning cup of Jazz, like a cup of strong hot coffee, to ease listeners pleasantly but firmly into the day and, as such, compiles jazz tracks with an easygoing yet energetic feel. The musical styles are all over the place: Latin Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, Jazz-Pop, Funky Soul-Jazz, so the collection really doesn't hang together well (unless you have a very short attention span and don't notice the abrupt shifts). Then again, the variety may actually make it more interesting for some listeners.

Bond Shine, Instrumental

A sort of cross between Sex and the City and the Kronos Quartet as they might be remixed by Paul Oakenfold (actually Orion and the Beatmasters do most of the producing), Bond is a string quartet of toothsome beauties at least as concerned with their hair and makeup as their playing whose work on Shine is heavily augmented with dance beats. It's a formula that sits them atop the classical crossover charts, up there with Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban, and why not? As with their peers, the music is only ersatz classical, containing classical tunes here and there mixed in with classical-sounding new compositions. And the elaborate dance programming makes the music highly, well, programmable. Leadoff track "Allegretto" was quickly tapped for an upscale television commercial, a mark of success in this market previously achieved by the likes of Moby. Here and there among the oddly familiar melodies are actually identifiable ones. "Strange Paradise" is a much modified version of the same theme from Borodin's "Polovetsian Dances" in his opera Prince Igor that became the show tune and pop hit "Stranger in Paradise" from the musical Kismet; "Kashmir" is the Led Zeppelin song; "Libertango" comes from Astor Piazzolla; the bonus track, "Bond on Bond," is, inevitably, Monty Norman's James Bond movie theme; and "Space" sounds like the theme from every movie ever set in a Middle Eastern desert (although here it sounds like it comes from a Middle Eastern disco). The CD booklet, full of fashion-style photography, outdoes anything from Britney Spears, and, of course, there's nary a musical instrument in sight. The music may be the least of it, but as marketing, Bond is hard to fault. (William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide)
